Priority at junctions

Cyclists may have to overtake parked vehicles, other cyclists or obstructions such as road works. When overtaking a parked vehicle they need to remember that the doors may open suddenly and people may step out in front of them.

• Look back.
• If safe behind, signal clearly with the right arm – holding the signal as they move out towards the centre of the road.
• Put both hands back on handlebars.
• Give a lifesaver look back.
• Make sure you leave enough room for a car door to open.
• You should look over the left shoulder, making eye contact with any driver and checking that the vehicle is not about to move off.
• Once you are safely past the obstruction you can return to the left – you don’t need to signal and should not cut in too sharply.
